Carnival Costumes: Looking Beyond the Sparkle
Sparkle catches the eye quickly; construction asks you to stay a little longer. A costume can be read through silhouette, repeated shapes, contrast and movement. Instead of calling everything extravagant, try describing one precise detail. Your photographs and memories will become more interesting immediately.
Look at the ensemble
Watch how a group of costumes works together. A shape that seems curious on one person may become legible when dozens move through the same space. Notice the relationship between fabric, props and the parade theme. Fantasias appears in LIESA’s judging materials, a reminder that costumes form part of the performance rather than a decorative afterthought.
Give the makers their due
If you share a costume photograph, distinguish verified information from your own visual impression. Do not assign a religious or historical meaning based on appearance alone. Read the school’s description, name it accurately and acknowledge that design involves many hands. Admiration becomes richer when it includes the work behind the image.
