Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta: Neighborhoods and Beach Towns Compared

Puerto Vallarta curls around the Bahía de Banderas, one of the largest bays in Mexico, with jungle-covered mountains tumbling to the water. Where you stay can mean cobblestones and taco stands, a sleek marina, or a hushed luxury peninsula. Here’s how the options stack up, to pair with our Puerto Vallarta guide.
Zona Romántica: Old Town Energy
South of the Río Cuale, the Zona Romántica — also called Old Town — is the city’s most characterful base. Cobblestone streets are packed with cafés, galleries, taco stands and bars, and everything leads down to Playa Los Muertos and its striking pier. It’s also the heart of Vallarta’s famously welcoming LGBTQ+ scene.
It’s lively, walkable and social, with water taxis from the pier to the southern beaches. Hillside streets can be steep, and nights can be noisy near the bars, so choose your block wisely. Stays here range from small guesthouses to beachfront towers, so there’s something for most budgets.
Centro and the Malecón
Just north of the river, Centro is anchored by the Malecón, a seaside promenade lined with bronze sculptures, street performers and sunset crowds. Above it rises the crown-topped Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the city’s most recognizable landmark.
Centro puts you close to the action, with easy walks to Old Town. Beaches here are narrower and rockier than elsewhere, so it suits travelers more focused on atmosphere than sunbathing.
Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta
The Hotel Zone stretches north of Centro along a wide, sandy beach lined with large resorts. It’s convenient and practical for families and beach-first travelers, with shopping and supermarkets nearby.
Farther north, near the airport, Marina Vallarta is a planned development of condos, hotels and golf courses wrapped around a yacht marina. It’s calm, tidy and ideal for boaters and longer stays — though you’ll likely taxi into town for nightlife and street food.
Conchas Chinas: Hillside Views
Just south of Los Muertos, Conchas Chinas climbs the hillside with villas, boutique stays and condos overlooking small rocky coves. The views across the bay are superb, and it’s a short ride or a walk into the Zona Romántica.
The catch: steep streets and stairs. It’s best for couples and travelers who value privacy and a view over walkability. Many rentals come with plunge pools or terraces — perfect for whale-spotting in winter.
Nuevo Vallarta and Punta Mita
Across the Ameca River, in the neighboring state of Nayarit, Nuevo Vallarta is home to long, flat beaches and many large all-inclusive resorts. It’s popular with families who want to settle in and stay put. The trade-off is distance: getting into Vallarta’s Old Town takes a while, especially at busy times, so it works best if the resort is the main event.
At the bay’s northern tip, Punta Mita is the luxury end of the spectrum, with high-end resorts, golf, private residences and surf breaks nearby. It feels a world away from the city — which is exactly the point — but plan on longer drives for day trips.
Sayulita: Surf-Town Alternative
About an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, depending on traffic, Sayulita is a bohemian surf town with a lively plaza, beginner-friendly waves, colorful streets and a youthful energy. It can get crowded, especially on weekends and in high season.
For something mellower, neighboring San Pancho (San Francisco) offers a quieter beach village vibe. Along the coast between, towns like Bucerías offer a middle ground between city and village.
