Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta: Beach Towns, Islands and Mountain Villages

Puerto Vallarta is a great base for exploring the Bahía de Banderas and beyond. In a single day, you can surf in a bohemian beach town, take a boat to a road-free village, snorkel protected islands or climb into the mountains. Here are the most rewarding escapes, to pair with our Puerto Vallarta guide.
Sayulita and San Pancho
About an hour north, depending on traffic, Sayulita is a colorful surf town with a lively plaza, beginner-friendly waves and a buzzy, bohemian feel. Rent a board, take a surf lesson or simply people-watch from the beach.
Just beyond, San Pancho (San Francisco) is calmer and more laid-back, with a long beach and a slower pace. Visiting both in one day makes an easy, relaxed outing. Buses run up the coast from Puerto Vallarta, or you can hire a driver for more flexibility. Along the way, the coastal towns of Bucerías and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle make pleasant stops for a stroll or a seafood lunch.
Yelapa by Boat
South of the city, Yelapa is a small village tucked into a cove, reached mainly by boat. Water taxis run from Playa Los Muertos pier and from Boca de Tomatlán, farther down the coast. The ride along the jungle-backed shoreline is half the fun.
Once there, hike to the waterfall, swim, eat grilled fish on the beach and try a slice of the village’s famous homemade pie. Along the way, beaches like Las Ánimas and Quimixto offer further stops. Check the time of the last boat back before you settle in, and pack light — landings can be wet.
Marietas Islands
Off the tip of Punta Mita, the Islas Marietas are a protected national park, known for seabirds such as blue-footed boobies, clear water for snorkeling and dramatic rock formations. Tours depart from Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita.
The famous Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor) hides inside a crater-like opening in the rock, open to the sky. Access has been restricted and permit-limited to protect the environment, and it has been closed at times, so check current rules and choose a licensed operator. Even without the beach, the islands are well worth the trip.
Los Arcos
Closer to the city, off Mismaloya, Los Arcos are a group of granite rock formations with natural arches rising out of the sea. The area is protected and popular for snorkeling, diving and kayaking. It’s often combined with a boat tour to the southern beaches — a great half-day option.
San Sebastián del Oeste
Up in the Sierra Madre, roughly an hour and a half to two hours from the city, San Sebastián del Oeste is a former mining town with cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings and cool mountain air. It’s known for coffee, raicilla and a tranquil plaza anchored by a historic church. It has been named one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, and it’s an easy place to spend a slow afternoon with a cup of local coffee.
The winding road is part of the experience. Bring a light layer — it can be noticeably cooler up here than on the coast.
Whale Season
Roughly December through March, humpback whales arrive in the Bahía de Banderas to breed and give birth. Boat tours go out to spot them breaching and tail-slapping, and sometimes you can see them from shore.
Choose operators that follow responsible whale-watching guidelines and keep a respectful distance. Mornings often offer calmer water, and a light jacket helps on the ride back.
Planning Your Day Trips
- Check conditions — boat trips depend on weather and sea conditions.
- Protect the reef — use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching marine life.
- Confirm the rules — park permits, access and fees change, so verify before booking.
- Build in time — travel times are approximate and traffic in the bay can be slow.
Pick one or two of these escapes and weave them into our three-day Puerto Vallarta itinerary for a trip that balances beach, sea and sierra.
