When the city gets loud, Guadalajarans head to the lake. Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest freshwater lake, sits roughly an hour south of the city and is ringed by mountains, lakeside promenades and small towns with a famously gentle climate — mild and sunny for much of the year. Here’s how to spend a day there, to pair with our Guadalajara guide.
Getting There
The drive from Guadalajara to Chapala usually takes about an hour, depending on traffic and where you start. From there, Ajijic is a short hop west along the shore.
- By bus — regular buses run from Guadalajara to Chapala and Ajijic; it’s an easy, budget-friendly option.
- By car or driver — the most flexible choice, especially if you want to visit several lakeside towns.
- By rideshare or taxi — convenient one-way, though returning can require more planning, so confirm your ride back in advance.
Chapala: The Lakeside Town
The town of Chapala has been a weekend retreat for over a century, and you can still see stately older villas along the lakefront. Start with a stroll along the malecón, the waterfront promenade, where families gather, vendors sell snacks and the pier juts out over the water.
From the waterfront, boats can take you out onto the lake. Small islands, including Isla de los Alacranes, are popular destinations; Isla de Mezcala, farther east, is known for its role in Mexico’s independence struggle. Confirm current boat options and agree on pricing before you board.
Ajijic: Color, Art and Cobblestones
Ajijic is the charmer of the lakeshore. Its cobblestone streets are lined with brightly painted houses, murals, galleries and small boutiques, all leading down to a relaxed malecón. The village has long attracted artists and writers, and today it’s home to a large community of international retirees, which gives it a friendly, cosmopolitan feel.
Spend your time wandering the plaza, browsing local art and crafts, and watching the light change over the water from the lakefront. It’s an easy place to lose an afternoon. Look out for the village church and the plaza bandstand, and for the many murals that brighten walls around town, often celebrating local life and Indigenous heritage.
What to Eat by the Lake
Lakeside stands and casual restaurants traditionally serve charales, tiny fried fish eaten whole with lime and salsa — a classic Chapala snack. You’ll also find Jalisco staples like birria and seafood, plus cafés and bakeries in Ajijic. Grab a fresh fruit cup with chile and lime for the walk. If you’re there on a weekend, the waterfront feels like a small festival, with families picnicking and vendors selling ice cream and toys.
A Sample Day
- Morning — leave Guadalajara early, then walk the Chapala malecón and pier while it’s still cool.
- Late morning — take a boat ride out onto the lake if conditions are good.
- Lunch — eat by the water in Chapala or head to Ajijic for lunch.
- Afternoon — explore Ajijic’s streets, murals and galleries.
- Sunset — watch the sky change over the mountains from the Ajijic malecón before heading back.
With more time, continue west to Jocotepec, a quieter town at the lake’s western end.
Prefer to linger? Many visitors stay a night or two in Ajijic, where evenings are calm and mornings by the water are especially lovely. It also makes a comfortable base for hiking in the hills above the lake — go with a local guide or a group, and check trail conditions first.
Good to Know
- Water levels — the lake’s level can vary noticeably from year to year, which affects how the shoreline looks.
- Swimming — the lake isn’t generally considered a swimming destination; enjoy it from the shore or a boat.
- Weekends — Saturdays and Sundays are lively and busier; weekdays are calmer.
- Sun — the high-altitude sun is strong, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
Lake Chapala makes a restful counterpoint to the city’s energy. Slot it into our three-day Guadalajara itinerary on a day when you’re ready to slow down.
