Day Trips from Quito: Markets, Cloud Forest and Volcanoes

Quito is a superb city, but part of its magic is what surrounds it. Within a few hours you can be haggling in an Andean market, walking through misty cloud forest or standing beneath one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. These are the excursions we would prioritize — see our Quito guide for the city itself.
Otavalo Market
About two hours north of Quito, the town of Otavalo is home to one of South America’s best-known Indigenous markets. The Plaza de los Ponchos overflows with textiles, woven blankets, alpaca-blend sweaters, embroidered blouses, jewelry and crafts. Saturday is traditionally the biggest market day, when stalls spill into the surrounding streets.
Friendly bargaining is expected. Many trips pair the market with stops at nearby craft villages, the scenic lakes of the region or the Peguche waterfall, making it an easy, full day out.
Mindo Cloud Forest
Heading northwest, the road drops from the highlands into lush, humid cloud forest. Mindo, roughly two hours from Quito, is a small town surrounded by some of the richest birdlife in the country. Hummingbirds are everywhere, and serious birders come for toucans, tanagers and much more.
- Birdwatching — early mornings are best; guided walks help you spot more.
- Waterfalls — trails lead to several cascades in the surrounding forest.
- Butterflies and chocolate — butterfly gardens and cacao tours are local favorites.
- Adventure — ziplines and tubing are popular with the more adrenaline-minded.
Pack a rain layer; the name “cloud forest” is not decorative.
Cotopaxi National Park
South of Quito, Cotopaxi’s near-perfect snow-capped cone rises from high, windswept páramo grassland. It is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, and on a clear day the view is unforgettable. Most visits include a stop at Limpiopungo Lagoon, and many continue up toward the parking area below the refuge for a steep, breathless walk at serious altitude.
Cotopaxi’s volcanic activity has at times led to access restrictions, so check current park conditions and official guidance before you go. Dress in warm layers, bring sun protection and do not rush your climb — you will be well above Quito’s already lofty elevation. Mornings often offer the clearest views.
Mitad del Mundo
Just north of the city, Mitad del Mundo celebrates Ecuador’s position on the equator with a large monument and a painted line where visitors happily straddle two hemispheres. Nearby, a smaller museum offers playful demonstrations and cultural exhibits.
It is an easy half-day trip, and it pairs well with a visit to the Pululahua crater viewpoint, where a small farming community sits inside the caldera of an extinct volcano. Arrive early, as mist often fills the crater later in the day.
Quilotoa: A Long Day or an Overnight
Quilotoa is a volcanic crater filled with a vivid turquoise-green lake, and it is one of the most striking landscapes in the Ecuadorian Andes. It is also a significant journey — several hours each way — which makes a day trip long and tiring.
If you have the time, consider staying overnight in the area. That lets you hike down to the water (and back up, at altitude), walk part of the rim or explore sections of the Quilotoa Loop, a multi-day trekking route through highland villages. Weather can shift quickly, so bring layers.
Planning Your Day Trips
- Go guided or self-drive — organized tours simplify logistics; buses and private drivers offer more flexibility.
- Start early — clouds often build over the Andes as the day goes on.
- Respect altitude — acclimatize in Quito before tackling Cotopaxi or Quilotoa.
- Layer up — temperatures vary widely between highland, páramo and cloud forest.
- Check conditions — park access and road status can change, so confirm before you go.
With a few extra days, it is worth slotting one or two of these around our three-day Quito itinerary — the contrast between the city and the landscapes around it is a big part of what makes Ecuador special.
