Sensi Studio in Ecuador: The Art of the Modern Panama Hat

In Guayaquil, tropical light changes the logic of dressing. Shade becomes an accessory, natural fibers feel instinctively right, and a beautifully proportioned hat can transform a simple look into a complete point of view. Sensi Studio, founded by Ecuadorian designer Stephany Sensi, turns that relationship between climate, craft and style into modern Panama hats, woven bags and relaxed ready-to-wear.
The pieces carry the confidence of resort fashion without losing their origin. Toquilla straw is dyed, woven and shaped by hand; baskets and totes bring texture to city dressing; wide brims feel dramatic but never fussy. The result is Ecuadorian craft seen through a cosmopolitan lens.
From Guayaquil to the Andes
Sensi Studio’s headquarters are in Guayaquil, while its craft network reaches into Ecuador’s Andean region. The house says every product is manufactured in Ecuador and works closely with women artisans, providing fair remuneration while supporting the continuation of a millenary toquilla-straw weaving tradition.
This geography matters. Guayaquil brings coastal ease and an outward-looking fashion energy; the Andes bring the patient knowledge required to turn palm fiber into an object that is light, resilient and beautifully structured.
Stephany Sensi’s Fashion Education
Stephany Sensi studied fashion design at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and later completed a master’s degree in brand management there. She then worked with Tomas Maier in Miami from 2006 to 2010. That international training helps explain the brand’s balance: traditional materials are treated with the precision, color instinct and merchandising clarity of a global accessories house.
Launched in 2010 as a design and product laboratory, Sensi Studio began with genuine Panama hats, handwoven handbags and accessories. Ready-to-wear followed in 2014 with a focus on embroidered summer dresses.
The Pieces to Notice
- El Campesino: a 100-percent toquilla-straw hat whose clean shape celebrates hand weaving and everyday versatility.
- Lampshade brims: cone-like silhouettes with a small crown and widening brim—part hat, part architecture.
- Wide-brim Cordovan shapes: polished enough for a city lunch, protective enough for tropical light.
- Toquilla and sisal bags: baskets, buckets and totes that pair natural texture with leather, linen, fringe or sculptural handles.
- High Summer 2026: the current collection mixes refined natural fibers with leather and elevated warm-weather detailing.
The Jet Set LatAM Styling Edit
Let the hat set the proportion. Wear a wide lampshade brim with a slim column dress, flat sandals and a small woven bag. Pair El Campesino with high-waisted linen trousers and a silk scarf tied close to the neck. For the beach, a toquilla tote and oversized shirt feel more enduring than a themed resort look.
Keep the palette sun-washed—natural straw, cacao, ivory, clay—then add one unexpected color in the ribbon or bag. The craft should remain visible, so avoid over-accessorizing.
