Casco Antiguo: for atmosphere and a compact starting point
Casco Antiguo, also called Casco Viejo, is the neighborhood to consider when old-city streets, plazas and boutique-hotel character are central to your trip. Panama’s official places-to-stay guide is a useful introduction to how the city’s hotel areas differ.
Look beyond a beautiful balcony photograph. Ask about evening noise, the room’s position and vehicle access to the entrance. If your plans lean toward long evenings nearby, the exact block matters more than the broad neighborhood name.
Avenida Balboa, El Cangrejo and San Francisco
Compare Avenida Balboa when a modern hotel and access to the Cinta Costera waterfront fit your plans. El Cangrejo is another area to search for a city base, while San Francisco is worth considering when meals there are part of the itinerary. These are different starting points rather than extensions of one continuous old-town walk.
Choose two or three anchor activities, place them on a map, then compare hotel locations. Check entrance details and current journey estimates before deciding that a lower room rate is a better overall deal. Build comfortable transfer margins into reservation days.
Your first city day: give Casco time
Make one day about Casco’s streets, a cultural stop and an unhurried meal. The companion food and design guide introduces local craft and shopping choices, including how to ask about the maker behind a piece. Leave space between browsing and a restaurant reservation rather than treating shops as fixed-duration attractions.
If fashion and design are the reason for the outing, check a boutique’s current location and opening arrangements directly. Do not assume that every item sold in a Panama shop was made in Panama; provenance is part of choosing well.
A separate outing for the canal
The canal is one of the major experiences highlighted by Panama’s official city guide. Give it a distinct block of time and check the visitor experience’s official arrangements before booking transport or a tour.
Our existing two-day Casco, canal and Amador itinerary is the next planning step. Choose the elements that fit your interests; a first visit does not require every major attraction in a single afternoon. Check exactly which admissions and transfers a tour includes.
Make practical room for the city
Keep an indoor option for a weather-affected afternoon and carry what you need for a comfortable outdoor walk. Save your hotel entrance, booking details and return-transfer plan. Confirm the airport on your ticket and the pickup instructions rather than relying only on a generic city name.
A short visit works best with one major outing per half-day and space for meals around it. The neighborhood choices here are an editorial planning framework, not a ranking of hotels or a promise of a particular transfer time. For a longer trip, continue into the Panama hub and country itinerary.
