Capital to coast
This route runs east along the Atlantic: two days in Montevideo, then Punta del Este and José Ignacio. Arrive by air or by ferry from Buenos Aires.
A car makes the coast easy; the drive from Montevideo to Punta del Este takes around two hours.
Day 1
Montevideo’s Old Town
Walk the Ciudad Vieja from Plaza Independencia.
Lunch at the Mercado del Puerto’s grills.
Sunset along the Rambla.
Day 2
Montevideo & Wine
Coffee and design shops in the city’s leafy neighborhoods.
A winery visit outside the city to taste Tannat.
Dinner in the old town.
Day 3
Punta del Este
Drive east along the coast.
The marina, the beaches and the famous hand sculpture emerging from the sand at Playa Brava.
Dinner by the port.
Day 4
José Ignacio
Continue to José Ignacio for a slow beach day.
Lunch at a beach restaurant, then climb to the lighthouse.
