Trip Planning
Three days, done right
Rio rewards a mix of iconic sights and unhurried beach time — this itinerary balances the must-sees with the slower rhythm that makes the Cidade Maravilhosa worth lingering in.
Base yourself in Ipanema or Santa Teresa, and build in downtime — Rio is not a city to rush.
Day 1
Christ the Redeemer & Santa Teresa
Go early to Christ the Redeemer via Corcovado’s cog train to beat the crowds and the heat.
Lunch in Santa Teresa, Rio’s hillside bohemian neighborhood of cobblestone streets and studios.
Wander the Selarón Steps and Lapa’s colonial architecture before the arches light up.
Live samba in Lapa — the neighborhood’s nightlife runs late and loud.
Day 2
Sugarloaf & the Beaches
Cable car up Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf) for sweeping views over Guanabara Bay.
Beach time in Copacabana or Ipanema — grab an água de coco from a beach kiosk.
Walk the length of Ipanema toward Arpoador for one of the city’s best sunset spots.
Dinner in Ipanema or Leblon, Rio’s most polished dining strip.
Day 3
Botanical Garden & Lagoa
Jardim Botânico — palm-lined paths, orchid houses, and quiet away from the beach crowds.
Lunch near Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, the lagoon ringed by Rio’s most scenic running/biking path.
Browse Ipanema’s Sunday Hippie Fair (if timing allows) or the boutiques along Rua Garcia d’Ávila.
A final caipirinha and dinner overlooking the water before departure.
