Plan an afternoon with appointments, not assumptions
Havana’s independent creative scene is most useful to explore when you know who you want to meet and what interests you. A working studio, an online brand and a public retail shop are different types of visit. Choose one confirmed appointment and one flexible addition instead of walking between several addresses that may not receive visitors that day.
Browse current collections, save the work you want to discuss and contact the business about access. Ask whether the maker will be present, whether there is a charge for a tour or workshop and what stock can actually be viewed. Confirm payment arrangements before you arrive, especially if you expect to buy a particular piece.
Dador: clothing and a working storefront by appointment
Dador’s official contact page lists its workshop and storefront at 253 Calle Amargura, between Habana and Compostela in Old Havana. It currently says visits are by appointment. Arrange a time directly before traveling there and reconfirm if your plans change.
Look at fabric, construction and how the garment feels in the climate you will wear it in at home. Ask about fit, care and whether alterations or custom work are available within your stay. A workshop visit should leave room for conversation, not only a quick transaction. Request the current total and turnaround time before agreeing to any made-to-order item.
Clandestina: use the brand's current channels
Clandestina’s own brand story connects its design identity with contemporary Cuba. Its current online collections provide a useful introduction to graphic clothing and the brand’s visual language. Use those channels to ask where and how to see the work during your Havana dates.
Do not assume that an online product is held in a particular Havana storefront or that an older map listing remains current. Compare size, print quality, fabric and production information before choosing. A graphic shirt can be a compact souvenir when the design matters to you, but the best purchase is one you will wear beyond the trip.
Art studios: research the work and request access
Riera Studio’s Art Brut Project Cuba information offers a lead for researching a different part of the city’s visual-art landscape. Read about the project and artists before requesting a visit. Ask directly whether the space is receiving visitors, how an appointment works and whether the work you hope to see is currently available.
Respect the distinction between an exhibition, a working studio and a private collection. Ask permission before taking photographs, and do not assume that a visit includes a demonstration or an opportunity to buy. If booking through a guide, request the names of the actual spaces and the access promised rather than accepting a vague artists-of-Havana itinerary.
Buying art with a clear record
For original work, ask who made it, the medium, dimensions, whether it is an edition and what documentation accompanies the sale. Clarify whether a quoted price includes framing or packing. A numbered print and a unique painting are different purchases, and a seller should be able to explain which you are considering.
Ask the relevant official authority or your transport provider about any required export documentation before paying for artwork, and confirm baggage or shipping arrangements separately. Keep receipts and written details about the maker. Choose a piece you can transport responsibly and give the creative visit enough time to become part of the trip, not simply its shopping list.
