Nicoya is a region, not one resort town
The Nicoya Peninsula looks compact on a country map, but choosing a base is more useful than trying to visit every beach. Nosara, Sámara and Santa Teresa can all belong on a Costa Rica shortlist without belonging in the same short itinerary. Start with the ordinary day you want, then work backward to the airport and transfer.
Costa Rica’s tourism board places Nosara and Sámara in its Guanacaste coverage, while its southern peninsula information includes Santa Teresa and Mal País. That division is a reminder to check the actual route. A line drawn along the coast does not tell you the quality of a road or how your driver will reach the hotel.
Nosara and Guiones: build a repeatable routine
Look closely at the hotel’s location within the wider Nosara area. Playa Guiones is a particular beach setting, not a synonym for every accommodation marketed under Nosara. The tourism board describes the area’s beach and nature appeal, and it is a logical shortlist for travelers who want surfing and classes to shape several days.
Ask how you will reach the beach, the class venue and dinner from your room. A hillside address and a hotel near a beach path can create very different daily routines. Confirm whether the walking route works after dark and in wet weather. If you want to spend less time organizing transport, select the exact location around those repeated outings.
Sámara: consider the town as well as the bay
Sámara deserves a separate comparison rather than serving as a brief stop between better-known names. The official Guanacaste guide includes its beach among the region’s attractions. For a first stay, consider how the town, accommodation and beach access fit together, especially if you prefer a straightforward daily rhythm.
Look for a base that puts your meals and chosen activities within a manageable area. Ask a local operator about appropriate water conditions for your plans; no beach should be treated as automatically safe because it looks sheltered in a photograph. For families or mixed-interest groups, compare the room layout and transport arrangements as carefully as the scenery.
Santa Teresa: commit to the southern peninsula
Santa Teresa and neighboring Mal País form a southern-peninsula choice with their own appeal and logistics. Costa Rica’s official visitor information describes a combination of beach life and rustic infrastructure. Choose this area because you want to spend time here, not because you hope to combine it casually with every northern beach.
If arriving through the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry route, check the operator’s current sailing and vehicle arrangements. The tourism board identifies that route as relevant to Santa Teresa, Mal País and Montezuma. It is not the only possible arrival method, and the best option depends on your flight, luggage and accommodation. Ask the hotel to compare realistic alternatives.
How many nights make sense?
For three nights, one base is the practical default. Use arrival day to settle in, give one day to a planned activity and leave another for the beach and neighborhood. With five or six nights, you can deepen the same routine rather than assuming that extra time must mean another hotel.
If two different areas matter equally, plan a longer stay and treat the move as a travel day. Do not book a morning class in one town and a tightly timed afternoon activity in another before confirming the route. Time spent in transit is part of the holiday budget, even when it never appears on a receipt.
Choose the transfer before paying for the room
Send your accommodation the actual flight time and ask for a door-to-door arrival plan. Confirm the vehicle, luggage capacity, meeting point, payment and what happens if you are delayed. If renting a car, request current advice on the specific route and conditions instead of selecting a vehicle from a generic peninsula recommendation.
Ask the same practical questions for departure. A very early flight may change where you should spend the final night. The strongest choice is the base that supports both the holiday you want and a manageable journey. Our broader Nicoya guide offers more places to research once that decision is made; the Wellness hub helps you distinguish a relaxed hotel stay from a scheduled retreat.
