New Year’s Day 2027 in Oaxaca: a gentle city walk and a carefully planned meal

Oaxaca’s best January 1 plan is small: breakfast arranged in advance, a walk through the historic centre and one unhurried meal. This is a suggested holiday itinerary, not a confirmed programme of New Year’s Day events. Shops, markets and cultural sites need individual checks before they become fixed stops.
Walk between Santo Domingo and the Zócalo
Use the exterior of Santo Domingo and the pedestrian stretch of Macedonio Alcalá as your starting points, continuing towards the Zócalo if the route suits your group. Focus on the streetscape rather than a sequence of admissions. Church services and visitor access are different things; enter respectfully and avoid interrupting worship.
A short route also gives you freedom to pause wherever a café has confirmed service. If you hope to start with hot chocolate and bread, arrange breakfast with your accommodation or contact the café directly instead of assuming a favourite spot will open.
Markets: an option to verify
Oaxaca’s tourism office documents the food offer at Mercado 20 de Noviembre and the variety of Mercado Benito Juárez. Neither description confirms January 1, 2027 trading hours. Even when a building is accessible, individual stalls may follow different schedules.
If eating at a market is central to your trip, ask the stall or your local host about that particular day. Keep a second meal option. Do not turn a closed stall into a reason to rush across the city hungry.
Give artisan shopping another day if needed
Ask galleries and workshops when the makers or knowledgeable staff will be present. Discuss materials, provenance and packing before purchasing. A holiday window-shopping walk can be enjoyable without expecting a full studio visit.
Keep excursions separate
Monte Albán deserves its own planning and a confirmed site schedule, transport arrangement and return. Do not add it casually after lunch on a holiday. For January 1, a city walk and a meal leave more room to enjoy Oaxaca’s texture without making promises about openings that have not been verified.
