A majestic bronze statue of Pachacuti, the legendary ninth Sapa Inca, stands proudly against Cusco’s Andean backdrop — a timeless symbol of the empire’s power and enduring legacy.
Perched high in the Andes Mountains, Cusco is more than just a city — it’s the gateway to the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the heart of the ancient Inca Empire in Peru. Wandering through its cobblestone streets feels like walking between worlds: colonial plazas give way to stone foundations laid centuries ago, while Quechua language and vibrant textiles still pulse through daily life.
I arrived just before dawn, when the city was still wrapped in cool mountain air. Locals bustled to markets with baskets of fruit and flowers, and sunlight slowly illuminated the terracotta rooftops and surrounding peaks. Cusco is best explored slowly — allowing your body to acclimate to the altitude and your senses to soak in its layered history.
