Jet Set LatAM · Hotel Review
Most Amazon lodges are rustic. Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is the exception: a boutique lodge on the banks of the Rio Negro near the town of Novo Airão, facing the Anavilhanas archipelago, one of the largest river archipelagos in the world. It pairs real jungle immersion with design, comfort and good food.
Here’s our Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge review and how to plan your stay.
The lodge
Bungalows and chalets are set in the forest with views toward the river, finished in natural materials with comfortable beds and private verandas. Common areas, a pool and a restaurant overlook the Rio Negro.
The excursions
Stays are built around guided outings: canoe trips through flooded forest, jungle walks, piranha fishing, sunrise birdwatching, visits to riverside communities and night trips to spot caimans. Pink river dolphins live in these waters.
Getting there
The lodge is a few hours’ drive from Manaus, usually with a transfer arranged by the lodge. Most guests stay three or four nights.
Good to know
- Health. Talk to a travel clinic about yellow fever vaccination and malaria advice for the Amazon.
- Season. High water (roughly May to July) is best for canoeing in flooded forest; low water reveals river beaches.
- Fewer mosquitoes. The Rio Negro’s dark, acidic water means fewer mosquitoes than many Amazon areas.
What to pack
- Packing cubes: keep jungle gear organized
- Cashmere travel wrap: for air-conditioned flights
