Lima is the rare capital where the best shopping is also the best sightseeing. The boutiques live inside restored casonas in Barranco, designers work with alpaca and Andean motifs without turning them into costume, and you can walk from a gallery to a ceviche lunch without a taxi. The only real risk is the “alpaca” sweater that melts when you hold a lighter to it — we’ll get to that.
Barranco: design stores in old mansions
Barranco was once the seaside retreat of Lima’s wealthy families, and its crumbling-in-a-flattering-way mansions now hold galleries, cafés and the city’s most interesting shops. Dédalo (Jirón Sáenz Peña 295) is the essential stop: a restored casona turned into a labyrinth of rooms filled with contemporary Peruvian ceramics, glass, jewelry, textiles and clothing, with a café in the garden. Allow more time than you think.
Las Pallas has championed folk art from Peru’s coast, mountains and jungle for more than 25 years, displayed in its founder’s home — it feels like a small museum where you are allowed to buy the exhibits. Cajamarca 219, opened in 2014 by a French designer based in Peru since 2008, makes pared-back alpaca knitwear with subtle motifs. For silver, Cachicata works in contemporary forms, some drawn from pre-Columbian design, and the atelier Escudo takes its cues from Peru’s past.
Miraflores: ateliers, silver and Larcomar
Miraflores is more polished and more spread out. Giuliana Testino — a former professional basketball player who studied architecture before fashion — has an atelier known for knitwear and clean structure, and Pulga is the stop for eclectic, fashion-forward gifts. Larcomar, the shopping center built into the cliffs above the Pacific, has Ilaria for Peruvian silver plus outposts of well-known craft shops. For souvenirs at volume, the Indian Markets on Avenida Petit Thouars cover a lot of ground quickly.
How to buy real alpaca
A lot of “alpaca” in tourist markets is acrylic. Real alpaca feels cool and slightly dense rather than squeaky, and prices that seem too good usually are. If a seller allows it, a single loose fiber held to a flame chars and smells like hair if it is alpaca and melts into a bead if it is synthetic. Our Peruvian alpaca and vicuña buying guide explains grades like baby and royal alpaca.
