Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Arequipa might be the most underrated solo destination in Peru. The ‘White City’ is built from pale volcanic sillar stone, guarded by the cone of El Misti, and calm enough that you can wander its UNESCO-listed center without the crowds of Cusco. Arequipa solo travel is all about slow days: a monastery in the morning, a long picantería lunch, an alpaca shopping spree and sunset from a rooftop.
At about 2,300 meters, it’s also a gentle place to begin acclimatizing before the Colca Canyon or Lake Titicaca.
Boutique hotels in sillar mansions
Cirqa, set within part of the 16th-century San Agustín complex a block from the Plaza de Armas, is the city’s finest boutique stay, with stone vaults and a rooftop restaurant. Katari Hotel puts you right on the Plaza de Armas with heritage rooms and terrace views. Casa Andina Premium occupies the 18th-century Casa de la Moneda with courtyards and a small museum.
Eating alone, Arequipeño style
Arequipa’s picanterías are joyfully communal: long tables, big portions and dishes like rocoto relleno and adobo. Gastón Acurio’s Chicha refines regional classics in a colonial setting, and Zig Zag is known for meats cooked on volcanic stone. Lunch is the main meal here, which suits a solo traveler’s rhythm perfectly.
Monastery, markets and alpaca
Lose a morning in the Monasterio de Santa Catalina, a walled citadel of brightly painted lanes and cloisters. At Mundo Alpaca you can see the animals, watch traditional spinning and weaving, and buy certified baby alpaca. The San Camilo market is a sensory crash course in Andean produce.
The Colca Canyon add-on
Join a small-group or private two-day trip to the Colca Canyon to watch Andean condors glide at the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint and soak in hot springs. The route crosses high passes, so it’s best done after a few days in the city.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Walkable center. The historic center is compact and pleasant to walk by day and early evening.
- Taxis. Use hotel-called taxis or ride apps at night.
- Altitude. Arequipa is moderate (about 2,300 meters), but Colca’s passes are far higher.
- Real alpaca. Buy from established shops rather than street stalls.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: a blanket on the plane, a shawl at the chef’s counter
- Leather loafers: polished enough for dinner, sane on cobblestones
- Packing cubes: because you’re carrying your own bags, all of them
