UNESCO Mexico: All 36 World Heritage Sites and Living Traditions

Mexico’s heritage deserves more than a passing pyramid reference. There are cities to read on foot, landscapes that ask for patient planning, and living traditions whose meaning belongs first to the communities that carry them. This guide puts the full national picture in one place, then helps you choose a manageable journey.
Two kinds of recognition, different kinds of travel
As checked on 13 October 2026, UNESCO lists 36 World Heritage properties in Mexico: 28 cultural, six natural and two mixed. Its living-heritage country list has 12 Representative List elements and one Good Safeguarding Practices entry. Voladores belongs to the living-heritage list; El Tajín is a separate World Heritage property. The Centre for Indigenous Arts has a third, distinct safeguarding recognition.
Choose a route before a checklist
For a design-focused first trip, choose one city base and one substantial cultural visit. Use our Mexico City guide for a city stay, Oaxaca for a slower maker-led trip, or Guadalajara for a Jalisco chapter. The full list below is a reference, not a single road-trip route. Measure travel times between the exact places you select before booking accommodation.
Do not miss the newer inscriptions
The Wixárika sacred route to Wirikuta entered the World Heritage List in 2025. Treat that recognition as a reason to learn from community guidance, rather than assume sacred spaces are open to independent tourist visits. The Iztapalapa Passion representation was inscribed as living heritage in 2025; confirm visitor arrangements with its organizers, without assuming an everyday performance.
Short reader-friendly labels are used below. Each link opens UNESCO’s exact inscription and boundary information. A serial property may contain multiple components; an inscription does not designate every street, hotel or landscape in the wider destination.

Living heritage: all 12 elements and the safeguarding entry

Plan the encounter thoughtfully
Check access, current opening arrangements and transport with the responsible site or community. For ceremonies, give the public route and hosts’ directions priority over a photograph. Ask before photographing people, paying for a portrait or entering a workshop. Buy craft with named authorship, materials and care information; do not assume that a familiar pattern makes an object UNESCO-certified.
Choose accommodation for the actual route
The accommodation map below starts in Mexico City as a planning base for this nationwide guide. Change its destination for the places you choose. It does not draw UNESCO property boundaries, certify a hotel or reserve cultural access.
