Salvador is Brazil’s most African city, and its style shows it: bold prints, white lace, beads, color and rhythm. The shopping is less about international brands than about Bahian designers, artists and makers — and the best of it is in and around the historic center. Here is where to look, from new authorial fashion to the city’s great markets.
Santo Antônio Além do Carmo: authorial fashion and design
Just beyond the Pelourinho, the neighborhood of Santo Antônio Além do Carmo has become Salvador’s creative address, with restored colonial houses facing the Bay of All Saints. Shops here carry work by new Bahian artists and design pieces; names to look for include Casa Boqueirão and Estúdio Agá. In 2026, Casa Divino opened in a historic mansion as the home of the fashion label Areia, designed by Adailton Jr., and the décor and Brazilian-art brand Divino Ammor, with events and visits by appointment.
Bahian labels and the Afro-Bahian print tradition
Salvador has a strong scene of authorial fashion, often sold from studios and by appointment. Meninos Rei, by brothers Júnior and Céu Rocha, is known for maximalist prints; designer Goya Lopes pioneered Afro-Brazilian textile design in Salvador decades ago and remains a reference. In Rio Vermelho, multi-brand studios gather independent labels and accessories inspired by Bahian women’s style. Follow local labels on social media before your trip: many open showrooms on request.
Pelourinho, the Mercado Modelo and the Feira de São Joaquim
In the Pelourinho, Rua Alfredo de Brito concentrates shops selling Bahian clothing, instruments, craft and art at accessible prices; galleries around the Largo do Pelourinho sell contemporary art, naïf painting and gemstones. Down the Lacerda Elevator, the Mercado Modelo is the classic souvenir market — lace, beads, carved wood, capoeira berimbaus — best browsed rather than shopped hard. For a real local market, the vast Feira de São Joaquim sells Bahian ingredients, inexpensive craft and religious items; go in the morning, with little cash and a local guide if it is your first time.
The state-run Instituto de Artesanato Visconde de Mauá is a reliable place for traditional Bahian craft such as lace, weaving and wood carving.
