Jet Set LatAM · Packing Guide
Costa Rica is a small country that somehow fits four climates into one itinerary. You might soak in hot springs under Arenal in the morning, shiver in Monteverde’s cloud forest by afternoon and end the week on a sweltering Guanacaste beach. Packing for all of it in one carry-on sounds impossible. It is not.
Here is the Costa Rica packing list we would actually use, organized by zone, so you are ready for mud, mist and margaritas.
First, know your season
- Dry season (roughly December–April): sunny on the Pacific side, busier and pricier. Pack more sun protection.
- Green season (roughly May–November): sunny mornings and heavy afternoon rain, lush landscapes and lower rates. Pack a real rain jacket and quick-dry everything.
The Caribbean coast follows its own rhythm, so check your region. Our best time to visit Costa Rica guide breaks it down.
Rainforest and volcano (Arenal, La Fortuna)
- Quick-dry hiking pants or leggings and breathable tops
- Waterproof trail shoes or hiking sandals with grip
- A packable rain jacket — non-negotiable
- Swimsuit for hot springs, plus a cover-up for the resort
- Insect repellent and a long-sleeve layer for dusk
Planning a soak? Our Arenal Volcano guide covers hikes and hot springs.
Cloud forest (Monteverde)
Higher altitude means cool, damp and windy. Add a fleece or warm knit, long socks and a hat. Mornings on the hanging bridges can feel more like fall than the tropics.
Pacific beaches (Guanacaste, Nicoya, Manuel Antonio)
- 2–3 swimsuits and a rash guard for surfing or snorkeling
- Linen sets or sundresses for beach-town dinners
- Sandals, a sun hat and reef-safe mineral sunscreen
- A dry bag for boat trips
Wildlife-watching extras
- Binoculars — sloths are very good at hiding
- Neutral-colored clothing for guided walks
- A headlamp for night tours
What to leave at home
- Jeans: heavy, slow to dry and miserable in humidity
- Anything white you love for muddy trails
- Too many shoes — two pairs plus sandals is plenty

Where to stay
Combine a volcano or rainforest lodge with a beach base; most travelers split a week between La Fortuna and the Pacific coast. Our seven-day Costa Rica itinerary shows how. The flight search and live accommodation map below help you plan the rest of the trip.

Quick-dry clothing, a real rain jacket and shoes that can get wet.
Can I bring sunscreen?
Yes; mineral or reef-safe formulas are kinder to marine life.
