Jet Set LatAM · Solo Travel
Puerto Vallarta is the Pacific beach town for people who want a real town with their beach. Cobbled streets climb into jungle hills, the Malecón fills with sculptures and sunset walkers, and the Zona Romántica has one of the friendliest, most social dining scenes in Mexico. It’s an easy, welcoming solo trip, and famously one of the country’s most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations.
Where to base yourself
The Zona Romántica (Old Town), around Playa Los Muertos, is the liveliest and most walkable base. Gringo Gulch and El Centro, on the hillside above the river, are quieter, with views. Skip the big resort strips if you want to walk everywhere.
Boutique villas and small hotels
Casa Kimberly, the hillside villas once owned by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, is now an intimate boutique hotel with a sweeping view of the bay. Hacienda San Ángel, also linked to Burton, is a romantic collection of villas and gardens near the cathedral. In the Zona Romántica, adults-only Hotel Mousai brings a rooftop pool and a polished, grown-up atmosphere.
Eating alone
Puerto Vallarta is a joyfully social place to dine solo: bar seats, beach clubs and taco stands with shared counters. For a classic night out, Café des Artistes in El Centro is a long-loved garden restaurant. Eat fish tacos on the beach and a late-night taco al pastor on Olas Altas.
Solo-friendly experiences
Walk the Malecón at sunset, take a water taxi to the car-free village of Yelapa, explore the Vallarta Botanical Garden south of town, and from roughly December to March join a small-group humpback whale-watching tour on Banderas Bay.

What to pack
- Packing cubes: swim, linen and a sunset-dinner look
- Leather loafers: those hillside cobblestones mean business
