New Year’s Day 2027 in Panama City: Casco Antiguo or an Amador waterfront walk

Choose between Casco Antiguo and Amador for January 1 in Panama City, then reserve a meal in the same area. Both can anchor a pleasant first day, but combining them with the canal and a shopping itinerary creates more transport and holiday-opening checks than most travellers need after New Year’s Eve.
Casco Antiguo for streets and architecture
If you choose the historic district, plan a short walk with a confirmed coffee or breakfast stop. The interest is in the streets and buildings, not in assuming every museum, church or boutique will admit visitors on the holiday. Respect services and residents when photographing the neighbourhood.
Ask about steps and walking surfaces if accessibility matters. A restaurant described as being in a historic building may still require specific questions about its entrance, seating and toilets.
Amador for a waterfront outing
Panama’s tourism authority describes the Amador Causeway as a place to enjoy views of the city and the canal entrance. Pick a manageable section, bring water and plan shade. A waterfront setting does not make the route a swimming beach.
If you intend to rent equipment or visit an attraction along the causeway, confirm that operator’s January 1 hours separately. Walking the area should remain a workable plan if a rental counter is closed.
Book lunch with clear details
Verify the date, kitchen hours, menu and cancellation conditions. Keep the return journey simple and avoid relying on a second restaurant being open as your only backup. Save the address and reservation offline.
The canal needs its own visitor check
Canal operations and access to a visitor centre are different things. Confirm the relevant visitor facility’s holiday schedule before adding Miraflores or another ticketed stop. For an easy first day, leave that visit for a separately planned outing and enjoy the city at a slower pace.
