For travelers who notice the curve of a chair or the glaze on a bowl, Museo Franz Mayer offers a rewarding Mexico City museum visit. Its decorative-arts collection makes everyday objects the subject of close attention. The practical choice is whether to concentrate on the permanent collection or add a temporary exhibition; settle that before buying a ticket.
Tickets, location and opening hours
The museum is at Avenida Hidalgo 45 in the Centro Histórico. Its published schedule is Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm, with Monday closed. The official general-admission page lists MXN 130 in October 2026. Check your date, concessions and the exact included exhibitions before paying.
The museum also sells separately priced special experiences. A general ticket should not be read as unrestricted access to every event advertised on the homepage. Keep the confirmation available on your phone and leave time for entry before any later reservation. The museum’s ticket platform is a direct booking source, not an affiliate recommendation.
Start with objects and craftsmanship
The permanent collection spans ceramics, silver, furniture, sculpture and painting, with a substantial focus on the viceregal period. These are useful starting points for readers interested in interiors, collecting and the history of making.
Try comparing two objects with the same purpose. How does material change the way each could be used? Which parts are structural, and which are ornament? Looking this way makes a decorative-arts collection more accessible than treating every unfamiliar term as an obstacle. Labels and museum interpretation should guide historical conclusions; visual similarity alone does not prove a shared origin.
Choose one temporary exhibition
Use the museum’s current exhibition program to pick one additional show that genuinely interests you. Programs and installation dates change, so older travel photographs are not a reliable guide to what will be on display during your stay.
Our suggested first-visit plan is roughly two hours: begin with the collection, pause in the courtyard when accessible, and give the remaining time to your chosen exhibition. This is a planning allowance rather than a museum-imposed duration. If a special exhibition is the main reason for going, reverse that order and protect its time slot.
Keep the day manageable
The historic building and courtyard are part of the appeal, but ask the museum about step-free routes, lifts and seating if you require them. Confirm access to a particular gallery rather than assuming every temporary installation has identical conditions. Photography rules can also vary by exhibition; follow the signs in the rooms.
Bring only what you need for the visit and check bag restrictions before arriving with luggage. Leave a gap for lunch instead of stacking several museums without a break. Two attentive visits will generally give you more useful memories than a day spent racing closing times.

For another kind of design experience, read our Casa Luis Barragán architecture guide. That house requires its own advance reservation and belongs in a separately planned time window. Use the contrast as a theme for the trip: objects and craftsmanship at Franz Mayer, then the arrangement of light and space in a modern home.
