Every January, a big slice of Asunción packs up and moves about 50 km east to San Bernardino, the lakeside town Paraguayans call la ciudad veraniega, the summer city. Think Hamptons energy with Paraguayan prices: weekend houses, lakeside clubs and a nightlife scene that wakes up just as you’re thinking about bed. The rest of the year, it is a sleepy, leafy town with one of the prettiest views in the country.
The quick answer: San Bernardino is on the eastern shore of Lake Ypacaraí, about an hour or so from Asunción by car. Go for the lake views, the old German-founded town center, long lunches and summer nightlife. Swimming in the lake is not advised because of recurring cyanobacteria blooms; check local advisories. Pair it with Areguá or Caacupé.
A little history
San Bernardino was founded in the late 19th century by German immigrants, and you can still see it in the old houses and the town’s layout. It became the summer retreat of Asunción’s well-off families, and it has kept that role ever since. The lake also inspired “Recuerdos de Ypacaraí”, one of the most famous Paraguayan songs ever recorded. See our harp music guide for more on Paraguay’s music.
What to do in San Bernardino
- Walk the lakefront and the old town center around the plaza.
- Have a long lakeside lunch. Restaurants with terraces face the water.
- Watch the sunset. The lake turns pink and gold; it is the main event.
- Go out in summer. From December to February, lakeside clubs and bars host the country’s biggest summer parties.
- Visit Caacupé. The basilica, Paraguay’s most important pilgrimage site, is a short drive away. On 8 December, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive.
Can you swim in Lake Ypacaraí?
Not really. Lake Ypacaraí has suffered from pollution and cyanobacteria blooms for years, and swimming is generally not recommended. Some hotels and clubs have pools, which is where locals swim. Enjoy the lake from the shore or a boat, and always check current advisories.
How to get there
By car or ride-hailing app, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half from Asunción, depending on traffic. Buses also run from Asunción’s bus terminal. A driver or a guided tour makes it easy to combine San Bernardino with Areguá, Itauguá and Caacupé in one day; see our day trips from Asunción.
Should you stay the night?
In summer, yes: book early, because Asunción fills San Bernardino’s hotels. The rest of the year, a day trip is enough. Use the map below to compare lakeside stays.
