Paraguay’s most spectacular sight is not in Asunción, and you should go anyway. In the far south, near Encarnación, red sandstone ruins rise out of green hills: the Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesús, where Jesuits and Guaraní communities built entire towns in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are UNESCO World Heritage sites, they are hauntingly beautiful, and on most days you will share them with a handful of people.
The quick answer: the missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue are about 30 km from Encarnación, which is roughly 370 km (5 to 6 hours) from Asunción. Plan at least two days: drive or bus to Encarnación, visit Trinidad in the afternoon and stay for the night light show, see Jesús the next morning. Check light-show times with Senatur before you go.
A short history
From the early 1600s, Jesuit missionaries founded dozens of reducciones across what is now Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where Guaraní communities lived, farmed, made music and built monumental churches. Trinidad, founded in the early 18th century, became the largest and most ambitious of Paraguay’s missions. Jesús de Tavarangue was still under construction when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories in 1767, so its great church was never finished. UNESCO listed both in 1993.
What to see
Trinidad
The main church with its carved stone friezes of angels playing instruments, the plaza, the residences and the bell tower. The scale is staggering. Take your time; the detail is in the stone.
Jesús de Tavarangue
About 12 km from Trinidad. The unfinished church, with its trefoil arches, stands in open countryside. Quieter and, for many visitors, even more moving.
The night light show
Trinidad offers an evening sound and light show that illuminates the ruins. It is magical. Schedules change, so confirm days and times with Senatur or your hotel.

Encarnación sits on the Paraná River opposite Posadas, Argentina. It has a long Costanera, the San José river beach (busy in summer) and Paraguay’s most famous Carnival every February. It is a pleasant, easy base with good hotels; compare stays on the map below.
A two-day plan
