Jet Set LatAM · Food Guide
About 20 minutes south of Rosarito, the little village of Puerto Nuevo built a reputation on a single plate: Baja-style lobster, split and fried, served with rice, refried beans, salsa and warm flour tortillas. It’s one of the great road-trip lunches in Mexico.
Here’s how to order Puerto Nuevo lobster and get the most out of the village.
How it’s cooked
The local style is simple: Pacific spiny lobster, halved and fried in lard or butter until the shell crisps, then brought to the table with melted butter and lime. You pull the meat out, tuck it into a tortilla with beans and salsa and repeat.
How to choose a restaurant
The village is a cluster of lobster houses along a few streets, many with second-floor terraces over the sea. Walk around, compare menus, and look for places that are busy with local families. Ask whether the lobster is fresh or frozen and how prices are set, since many charge by size.
When to go
Lunch is the classic time, and weekdays are calmer. Lobster is most abundant and freshest during the local fishing season, roughly autumn through winter; outside it, ask what’s local.
Good to know
- Order extras. Margaritas, a seafood cocktail or fish tacos round out the meal.
- Pay attention to price. Confirm the price per lobster or per size before ordering.
- Combine it. Pair lunch with Popotla’s fish market or an afternoon in Valle de Guadalupe.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: Pacific breezes on the terrace
- Packing cubes: for the coastal road trip
