Valparaíso is a city that refuses to be flat, literally and otherwise. Its colorful houses tumble down the hills to the Pacific, century-old funiculars creak up the slopes, and every staircase is somebody’s canvas. For Valparaíso solo travel, the magic is concentrated on two neighboring hills, Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, where boutique hotels, galleries and terrace restaurants sit within a few steep blocks of each other.
It’s an easy add-on from Santiago, about 90 minutes by road, and a wonderful city to explore at your own pace (bring calves of steel).
Where to stay: Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción
Base yourself on these two UNESCO-listed hills. Casa Higueras is the city’s most luxurious stay, with a spa, a terrace restaurant and the only outdoor pool in town facing the bay. Palacio Astoreca, a 1923 Victorian mansion and Relais & Châteaux member, offers 23 rooms and an indoor pool for foggy days. Zero Hotel, in an 1880 house with just nine rooms, serves breakfast in a sunny conservatory with city views: perfect for a slow solo morning.
Dining with a view
Terrace restaurants are the city’s specialty. Maralegre on Cerro Alegre is a lovely choice for seafood and sunset tables, and the hotel restaurants at Casa Higueras and Palacio Astoreca welcome solo diners with bay views. Lunch is the best time to linger on a terrace while the light is clear.
Street art, funiculars and Neruda
Join a guided street-art walk to understand the murals and meet other travelers, then ride the Ascensor Reina Victoria or El Peral. Visit Palacio Baburizza, the fine-arts museum, and take a short taxi to La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda’s house with sweeping views of the bay.
Artisan finds
Galleries and small workshops on Cerro Alegre sell prints, ceramics and jewelry by local artists. Buying directly from the people who make them is part of the experience here.
Solo safety, the practical version
- Stay on the hills. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the most comfortable areas; the lower port district feels emptier at night.
- Taxis after dark. Use a taxi or ride app at night rather than walking the quieter stairways.
- Flat shoes. The streets are steep and uneven; use the funiculars.
- Getting there. Frequent buses run from Santiago; Casablanca Valley wineries are on the way.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: a blanket on the plane, a shawl at the chef’s counter
- Leather loafers: polished enough for dinner, sane on cobblestones
- Packing cubes: because you’re carrying your own bags, all of them
