Start at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya on the north side of the city is the best introduction to the Maya world before you visit any site. It is spacious and air-conditioned — a good choice for the hottest hours of the day.
Flamingos at Celestún
Celestún, about 95 km west of Mérida, is a biosphere reserve where boats take visitors through the estuary and mangroves to see flamingos. Boats from the bridge are calmer than those from the beach. Autumn and winter are considered the best seasons, though wild birds are never guaranteed. Bring repellent and stay for seafood by the beach.
A pyramid children can understand
Uxmal, a UNESCO site south of Mérida, has dramatic buildings and wide open spaces. Go at opening time to avoid the midday heat, carry plenty of water and agree on a short route before you start.
Cenote days
Swimming in a cenote is the Yucatán experience children remember most. Choose cenotes with stairs and platforms rather than ladders for younger swimmers, use life jackets, and skip sunscreen before swimming where operators ask you to protect the water.
Beat the heat
Plan outings for early morning and late afternoon, with a pool or museum in the middle of the day. Sunday evenings in the center bring music and dancing that children enjoy, and Progreso’s beach is an easy half-day escape to the sea.
