Two empires, one small town
UNESCO inscribed the Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento in 1995. Founded by the Portuguese and later contested with Spain, the town preserves an urban landscape where both traditions meet — a rare and compact example of their fusion.
Walk without a plan
The historic quarter is small enough to cover on foot in a few hours, which is exactly why it rewards wandering: the Calle de los Suspiros, the old city gate, the lighthouse and the plazas shaded by sycamores.
Stay for the sunset
Many visitors come for the day from Buenos Aires and leave too early. If you can, stay the night: the light over the Río de la Plata at sunset, and the quiet streets afterward, are the best of Colonia.
Connect it to the coast
Colonia combines naturally with Montevideo and Uruguay’s Atlantic coast. Our guides to Montevideo’s independent boutiques and to José Ignacio and Punta del Este shopping continue the trip.
Getting there
Fast ferries cross from Buenos Aires in a little over an hour; slower services take longer. Bring your passport, check documents for the crossing and book ahead in high season and on holiday weekends.
