Jet Set LatAM · Food Guide
West End is Roatán’s barefoot village: one sandy main road, dive shops, wooden docks and a string of restaurants facing Half Moon Bay. It’s where the island eats out, and where its mix of Honduran, Garifuna and English-speaking Caribbean cooking shows best.
Here’s what to eat in West End and how to plan an evening there.
What to eat
Start with baleadas, flour tortillas folded around refried beans, cheese and cream, the Honduran breakfast and snack. Try sopa de caracol, coconut-milk conch soup, and coconut bread from the island’s Afro-Caribbean tradition. Fresh fish, lobster in season and fish tacos round out the menu.
Where to go
Walk the main road and pick a deck over the water at sunset; the restaurants along Half Moon Bay are the classic choice. Simple baleada stands and local comedores offer the best value at lunch.
Make a night of it
Arrive before sunset, have a drink on a dock, then dinner. West End stays lively but relaxed; water taxis connect it to West Bay.
Good to know
- Lobster season. Honduras has a closed season for lobster in the spring; skip it then.
- Cash. US dollars and lempiras are widely accepted; carry small bills.
- Bugs. Sand flies are active at dusk; bring repellent.
What to pack
- Cashmere travel wrap: for breezy evenings on the dock
- Packing cubes: keep wet swimwear separate
