The most useful Arenal hot-springs question is not which photograph looks most luxurious. It is how you want the afternoon to feel, whether you need accommodation and what your ticket actually includes. Tabacón and Ecotermales offer two distinct ways to build a warm-water pause into a La Fortuna stay.

Two different booking decisions
Tabacón offers thermal springs and day-pass access, while its hotel guests have separate benefits, including access to its adults-only Shangri-La area. The day-pass page recommends advance reservations and water shoes. Do not assume a day pass provides every hotel-guest privilege.
Ecotermales describes a capacity-limited hot-springs experience, with two daily visiting sessions and dining options. Use its current reservation page to confirm the session you want. The choice is between formats and inclusions, not a promise that one place will be quiet on every date.

When a day pass makes more sense
A day pass is useful if you already have a La Fortuna hotel that fits your budget and daily routes. You can choose one thermal experience without paying for a resort stay you will not use. Compare the pass, any meal, lockers, towels and transport as a complete cost.
Check entry and exit rules, the session length and whether advance payment is refundable. A late-afternoon reservation after a tour can work, but only if the tour’s finish time leaves room to return, change and reach the springs without rushing.
Book the actual experience name shown on your confirmation. A transfer-and-springs package, an admission-only ticket and a spa appointment solve different needs.
When an overnight stay earns its price
An overnight resort stay can be worthwhile when the springs are a central part of the holiday. Repeated access and a room nearby may be more appealing than arranging transport after a long session. Confirm access on arrival and departure days, any age restrictions and which areas are reserved for guests.
If you will spend most of the time on full-day excursions, compare the overnight premium with a simpler base plus one pass. A hotel’s published facilities do not mean that all treatments or meals are included in its room rate.
A balanced Arenal day
Choose a short nature outing in the morning, leave time for lunch, and make the afternoon about the springs. Resist adding several demanding activities simply because they are all marketed as La Fortuna highlights. Use our Costa Rica guide for the broader route.
Bring swimwear, water shoes where requested, a dry change of clothes and a bag for wet items. Ask about towels before carrying your own. Follow the venue’s posted guidance, take breaks and choose a comfortable temperature rather than treating the hottest pool as an achievement. Anyone with a personal medical concern should seek individualized advice before using hot pools.
Arrange the return journey before entry. A relaxed experience ends better with a known pickup time and location.
The checklist before paying
- Exact venue, date, session and admission type.
- Meals and drinks included or charged separately.
- Transport, pickup radius and return arrangements.
- Children’s eligibility and access to specific areas.
- Lockers, towels and changing facilities.
- Cancellation, weather and late-arrival rules.
There is no need to collect multiple passes just to compare photographs. Choose the format that matches the trip and leave time to enjoy it.
